Sobering Thoughts

The rivers ran dry

and I peered out of the canoe

and felt the bottom rub against the rocks of the floor

witnessing the water level lose depth

I saw.

I saw more now than I ever had prior to being convinced to push oars and be stuck in the same space with my thoughts.

I knew more than I had prior to entering the car and enduring hours of Elton John in a vehicle traveling down I-57 towards Kankakee with nowhere to hide from

the voice.

The voice inside my head that had caused me to drink extra bottles

slur extra words

empty extra accounts

leave extra people

and just

roll.

Rolling through life, i was…

Before now.

Before I saw.

Before I knew.

And before the voice was silenced by the view from the center of a river running dry.
